Areas of the Game Attacking Defending Transition Set Plays Goalkeeping

3 Goal Game

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) VISION - USING/CREATING SPACE TO SHOOT/SCORE
GOALSCORING AGGRESSIVENESS & QUICK RELEASE SHOTS
TRANSITION
PLAYERS 13+ (PREFERABLY 3 GOALKEEPER)
SPACE CIRCLE AND 5m ZONE TO GOAL
EQUIPMENT 20+ BALLS, 3x GOALS

EXPLANATION:

  • Split group into 2 teams. GKs compete between themselves. 4 players from each team start in the zone.
  • Ball is played in alternately from team X and team O at the corner pushout mark on either side of the goal.
  • Both teams can attack and score in any of the 3 goals.
  • Example: Team X is in possession. They can move the ball to attack any goal. Team O works to defend all of the goals.
  • If the defending team wins the ball, they can attack any goal EXCEPT the goal that the opposing team was attacking.
  • If the ball goes out of bounds, on the next turn the ball comes in from the opposing team on the opposite side of the goal. **If a goal is scored, the team that scored puts the ball in again.**

COACHING POINTS:

  • Transition play. Speed of reaction after a goal is scored or ball goes out of bounds to figure out where next pass is coming from.
  • ATTACKING (X’s)
  • Vision > Awareness of and use of space to create goal shots.
  • Create 2v1 opportunities with quick change of direction.
  • Quick-release shooting under pressure.
  • Far post positioning for scoring tap-in goals.
  • DEFENDING (O’s)
  • Awareness of dangerous space (where is the attacker trying to go to?).
  • Maintaining balance in the area. Make sure defenders are aware of all dangerous shooting areas - do not leave any goal wide open.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Play 3v3 inside the area at the LTT level
  • TTT: 4v4 as described above
  • TTW: Change Numbers by giving a 30 second “Green Card” to each team at different points during the time period. Creating numbers up and down situation and decision-making.
