6 vs 3 Possession Game

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S)

VISION/USING SPACE TO MAINTAIN POSSESSION AND SCORE

OFF-BALL MOVEMENT

BASIC PASSING RECEIVING SKILLS

DEFENSIVE COMMUNICATION

PLAYERS 12+ FIELD PLAYERS, 0 GKS
SPACE FULL WIDTH OF FIELD, 22m LINE TO HALFWAY LINE
EQUIPMENT 15+ BALLS, 10+ CONES

EXPLANATION:

  • Split into 2 even teams
  • Teams take turns on attack and defence (ex. 5mins each)
  • Attacking team (X) has 6 players in zone. They score (1 point) by passing or carrying ball under control through one of 5 gates
  • Defending team (O) has 3 players. These players try to prevent X’s from scoring and dispossess.
  • Defending team can score (2 points) for passing or carrying under control through a gate.
  • Neither team can score two times consecutively in the same goal
  • After ball goes out of bounds, Coach plays another ball in to attacking team.
  • Substitutes should be made in the flow of the game.

COACHING POINTS:

ATTACKING (X’s)
  • Vision > Awareness of space, where the open gates are
  • Execution of simple passing and receiving skills > to find open lanes/players and score!
DEFENDING (O’s)
  • Vision > Awareness of dangerous spaces. Players cannot protect all goals but should recognize and react to most dangerous lines.
  • Communication: should come from the players farthest from the ball > directing players in front of them.

EVALUATION:

  • PASSING SUCCESS: For the drill to flow effectively, Attacking team (X) should have the skills to execute 5+ consecutive passes on a consistent basis.
  • If attacking team struggles to complete 2 or 3 passes, reduce the number of Defenders (O’s), until X’s build skills and confidence. Conversely, if it is too easy for attacking team, add a defender.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Begin with 6 attackers and no defenders in the zone. Give the team a time limit (eg 60 seconds) and see how many points can be scored (remember no consecutive scores in the same goal). Add 1/2 defenders in if skill level allows.
  • TTC: 6v3 as described in this drill. (Use 6v2 or 5v2 numbers if necessary, depending on skill level)
  • TTW: 6v4 Expose players to concept that possession skills need to be tighter in a smaller space. Play one period with full width of the field, then cut the space in half. Ball should be protected more in a smaller space, closer to the stick. Use numbers of 6v4 if possible.

ELITE TACTICAL:

  • Use a player presenting hard for the ball in the pocket to collapse defenders and open up wide lanes. And vice versa: use player presenting aggressively wide to open up central lanes.
  • Trap Zones and double teams: recognize when an attacking player has “loose” possession or has vision down - pressure and force a turnover.
