PLAYERS
6+ PLAYERS
SPACE
30m x FULL WIDTH OF FIELD TO GOAL
EQUIPMENT
10+ BALLS
EXPLANATION:
1 vs 2
X carries ball out of own defensive end, trying to get past 2 opponents (O’s) and through grid passed dashed line with possession.
O’s work together to double-team, tackle and counter-attack 2 vs 1 to eliminate X and go to goal.
2 vs 4
X’s carry ball out of own defensive end, trying to get past 4 opponents (O’s) and through dashed line with possession.
O’s work together to channel play and double-team, tackle and counter-attack 4 vs 2 to eliminate X’s and go to goal.
COACHING POINTS:
Front defender (O) engage and channel ball carrier (X), (control Speed, Angle and Distance) into double-team with second O.
Once O’s have gained possession, quick transition to the counter-attack. Off-ball O lead sharply away to open space, either wide or through. Ball carrier look to eliminate immediately with a transition pass.
In the 2 vs 4, when the O’s come up with the ball, off-ball O’s look to stretch the play immediately (vertical and horizontal) to give counter-attack options.
EVALUATION:
Defenders (O’s) should be communicating clearly with each other (mainly back defender directing on-ball defender) to create effective double-team.
Speed of transition and counter-attack is key. Counter should happen as quickly as possible to prevent other defenders recovering to help in a game.
PROGRESSION:
LTT: Not applicable
TTC & TTW: Once an O has made the tackle, develop the following off-ball movements:
1. Crossing/through leads ahead of the ball (interchange if possible)
2. Overlapping run in either direction behind ball carrier
