Channel Change

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) TRAIN PLAYERS TO SWITCH THE ANGLE OF ATTACK USING LATERAL BALL MOVEMENT
PLAYERS 14+ PLAYERS
SPACE HALF FIELD
EQUIPMENT 5+ BALLS, 6+ CONES

EXPLANATION:

  • Teams play directional 7 vs 7 (or can adjust numbers) on half field.
  • Field is split into 3 vertical channels (use flat cones/markings if possible).
  • Each time a team gains possession, they must transfer ball across and ball must be touched in all 3 channels before going to goal.

VARIATION:

  • Conditions can be adjusted so that the attacking team must bring ball back into the defensive half and transfer in the backfield before going forward to goal.

COACHING POINTS:

  • When there is a change of possession, the team with possession should look to immediately switch the ball to another channel to change the direction of attack, instead of going directly forward.

EVALUATION:

  • To transfer effectively, central players should offer more than one horizontal option. Players in the central channel should be on different vertical levels so the transfer is not easily prevented.
