Advantage Line Pass/Receive

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) INTRODUCE AND INVOLVE THE CONCEPT OF ADVANTAGE LINE IN ELIMINATING "DEFENDER" WITH PASS/RECEPTION
DEVELOP UNDERSTANDING OF PASS DIRECTION AND SPEED
DEVELOP UNDERSTANDING OF RECEIVING POSITION, DIRECTION & MOVEMENT OF FIRST TOUCH TO ELIMINATE DEFENDER
PLAYERS 8+ PLAYERS
SPACE HALF-FIELD
EQUIPMENT 10+ BALLS, 16+ CONES

EXPLANATION:

  • Players flow through grids (see diagram), following their pass each time.
  • Receiving player should pay attention to “Advantage Line” (dotted line on diagram) - a perceived line through a defender’s position. Receiver should either make their first touch ahead of Advantage Line, or push the ball ahead of the Line immediately.
  • Receiver cuts the ball inside on angle to cut off defender’s recovery and looks ahead for next pass.
  • OPPOSITE SIDE: Receiving player moves to left side of grid to receive and cut back inside.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Receiving player should open up wide of the cone with feet facing upfield, to allow a positive first touch on the move.
  • Passer should carry ball in a position to look upfield and pass on the move.
  • Passer should lead the receiver with a pass in front of him, to allow receiver to accelerate with first touch.

EVALUATION:

  • Watch the flow of the drill. Receiver should keep ball moving with first touch. Drill should flow with continuous movement (not stop and go).

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Same.
  • TTC: Same - use as skill warm-up drill.
  • TTW: Same - use as skill warm-up drill.
