Shooting - Creating Space

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) CREATING SPACE INSIDE THE CIRCLE TO RECEIVE AND SHOOT
PLAYERS 2+ PLAYERS
SPACE CIRCLE
EQUIPMENT 5+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

  • Ball starts with X1. X2 starts on the penalty stroke mark, and initiates the movement by signaling for the ball and leading away from the goal.
  • X1 passes the ball to X2’s stick in the area marked by cones (shaded in the diagram). This shaded area represents the limited space attacker usually has inside the circle.
  • X2 receives the ball, turns and shoots.
  • X2 returns to penalty stroke mark and repeat.

VARIATIONS:

  • Add in two more passers (see Multiple Pass diagram) so X2 is receiving passes from different angles.

COACHING POINTS:

  • X2 makes a sharp movement to receive and get balanced to receive with one touch and shoot with the 2nd touch.
  • X2’s first touch should go towards goal (likely a defender will be there in a game). First touch should put ball either lateral or away from goal.
  • Speed of release. Focus on a quick transition from reception to shot release.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Same.
  • TTC: Add turn for reverse stick shots also. Make sure shot is still released inside cones.
  • TTW: Add a passive defender (coach) who pressures the shot on reception. Defender can pressure from either Right of Left side - shooter should “feel” pressure and turn to shoot on opposite side.
