Close-Range Lift & Shoot Repetition

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) DEVELOP ENDLINE 3-D AND SHOOTING SKILLS FROM CLOSE RANGE/TIGHT SPACE
PLAYERS 6+ (GK'S OPTIONAL)
SPACE CIRCLE
EQUIPMENT 30+ BALLS, 3 GOALS, 6 STICKS OR REBOUND BOARDS OR LINES OF CONES

EXPLANATION:

  • Players set up in 3 lines to side of goals with a pile of balls at each line (see diagram).
  • First player X in each line tracks clockwise with ball towards goal.
  • X lifts ball, under control, over Stick/Rebound Board/Line of Cones, and moves with it slightly away from the goal line to the front of the goal.
  • X shoots ball while it is bouncing, lifting the shot high into the net.
  • After shooting, player continues clockwise to the next set of balls.
  • Repeat drill in the opposite direction (anti-clockwise). In this direction, shots will be reverse stick.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Player should maintain bent knees and low center of gravity while lifting the ball, to enable her to stay in contact with the ball and release shot when in front of goal in good position.
  • Encourage player to try different types of shot:
  • -short swing (choked up)
  • -full swing
  • -punch ball down into turf (when ball is behind back foot)
  • -one-handed swing

EVALUATION:

  • This drill is a good opportunity for players to try advanced 3-D skills with plenty of repetition.
  • Players should have the skill level to be able to lift the ball and stay within reach of the ball. If this happens, consistency of the shot will follow.
