Receiving Diamond

 

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) MOVING TO BALL TO RECEIVE, AND WORK ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOVING RECEPTIONS

EXPLANATION:

  • X2 starts at the back of the diamond, signals/presents for the ball and cuts back through either side of the diamond. X1 passes the ball to X2’s stick.
  • X2 receives the ball on the move, and turns with the ball to either side of the diamond.
  • X2 looks upfield and passes to X3.
  • X2 drifts back to the opposite end of the diamond from X3 (diagram 2), then signals for the ball and cuts back to receive again, turning to pass to X1.
  • Repeat so player in middle has 6-8 repetitions, then rotate. 
  • *X2 works on different types of receptions:
  • CLOSED reception: protecting ball and turning out away from defender. Focus: ball security.
  • OPEN reception: opening hips and turning upfield to face defender immediately, ball exposed to defender. Focus: vision upfield. 

COACHING POINTS:

  • Communication between passer and receiver is important for effective timing. X2 signals and moves when X1 is ready to pass, to arrive at reception point at the same time as the ball.
  • X2 should move/run THROUGH the reception, thus moving the ball with his first touch away from a defender.
  • As X2 turns, he should get eyes upfield as soon as possible to see passing options and release pass. 

EVALUATION:

  • Accurate and flat passes from the outside players will make X2’s reception much more likely to be successful at speed.
  • X2 should receive the ball in stride, maintaining movement, or turn efficiently with it without stopping/starting. Movement should be fluid.
