Receive and Shoot Under Pressure

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) RECEIVING AND SHOOTING IN TIGHT SPACE UNDER PRESSURE
PLAYERS 3+ PLAYERS
SPACE 23m TO GOAL
EQUIPMENT 10+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

  • X3 starts posted up at the top of the circle, inside central zone. X3 is marked on one side by Coach (C). X1 and X2 pass the ball laterally outside level with the 5m dashed line.
  • X3 signals for a pass when open, and X1 or X2 passes in to X3.
  • Coach (defender) applies pressure and takes away one side. X3 feels pressure from defender and pushes the ball to the opposite space and shoots.
  • Play rebounds.

COACHING POINTS:

  • X3 is working in a small space, and must be aware of where the defensive pressure is coming from. He can look over his shoulder, and can also use body contact to feel where the defender is and shield the incoming pass from the defender trying to intercept.
  • X3 signals clearly where he wants to receive the ball by using stick or pointing.
  • If possible, X3 should redirect the ball to space with first touch, and then shoot with second touch, before defender can pressure the shot.

EVALUATION:

  • Coach can start with passive pressure, and increase pressure or decrease pressure depending on how effective X3’s shooting is.
