Stickhandling Skills 4: L-R 3-D Skills

 

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) DECEPTIVE CHANGE OF DIRECTION AND LIFT WITH BALL TO ELIMINATE DEFENDER
PLAYERS 1+, GK OPTIONAL
SPACE 35m x 10m
EQUIPMENT 10+ BALLS, 20x CONES

EXPLANATION:

  • Player X carries the ball to the first set of cones and tracks at speed towards the Left cone, positioning the ball at 11 o’clock in relation to his body. X decelerates, leans left, then pulls the ball to the right.
  • As the ball is moving laterally, X lifts the ball up and over the cones (over a flat stick) moving forward. She settles the ball on the move, tracks towards the Left cone at the next line of cones, and repeats.
  • After the 3rd set of cones, X shoots, turns back and jogs to starting point. 

COACHING POINTS:

  • This skill aims to eliminate a defender making a flat reverse stick tackle, so the forward acceleration movement should be as explosive and dynamic as possible.
  • Once ball is out in front, X should get vision upfield to see the next defender or where the goalkeeper is. 

EVALUATION:

  • Although X is looking for explosive forward movement, player should always stay in reach of ball - avoid letting ball run too far ahead.
  • The drag and lift skills should be executed quickly and in a controlled manner to be effective. As with other stickhandling drills, skills should be fluid at speed, avoiding stop-start movements.
