Stickhandling Skills 7: Extended 3-D Dribble at Speed

DRILL OBEJCTIVE(S) DEVELOP EXTENDED 3-D ELIMINATION SKILLS AT SPEED
PLAYERS 4+. GK
SPACE 30m TO GOAL
EQUIPMENT 10+ BALLS, 8+ STICKS, REBOUND BOARDS, LINES OF CONES

EXPLANATION:

  • X1 passes to X2 to initiate play.
  • X2 receives and moves forward with ball.
  • X2 gets ball in the air, and keeps the ball moving in the air over the sticks, changing direction on angles towards the circle.
  • Once over the last stick, X2 shoots as soon as he enters the circle.
  • X1 passes to X3, who executes the same skill from the opposite side.
  • Players alternate sides after shooting.

VARIATIONS:

  • Angle/direction of the line of sticks can be changed as desired.
  • Separation/spacing between sticks can be changed. The higher the skill level, the closer together the sticks can be.

COACHING POINTS:

  • It will be easier for the player to lift the ball initially with a  change in direction to get some friction on the ball rolling onto the stick. This will also help keep the ball moving forward with change of angle.
  • Make sure the ball stays below knee height to avoid dangerous play.
  • Stick should stay as close to ball as possible.

EVALUATION:

  • Developing the ability to maintain speed while keeping the ball under control in the air is the key here. As a player is learning, he will likely have to stop and restart.
  • As the player becomes proficient, he should be able to change direction of the ball in the air.
