Overlap Reverse Stick Pass

 

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) DEVELOP REVERSE-STICK PASSING SKILLS

EXPLANATION:

  • This drill will develop skills that are effective in 2 vs 1 elimination.
  • Two players start horizontal/level, 5-7m apart.
  • Starting player tracks ball across on a 45 degree angle (approx), and off-ball player overlaps behind ball-carrier.
  • Ball-carrier plays a horizontal reverse stick pass into the path of the overlapping player to receive.
  • Once player has received the pass, she carries it back inside across the field on a 45, and the movements are repeated. 

VARIATIONS:

  • Switch starting positions and make this a forehand pass in the opposite direction.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Passer’s ball position should be out ahead of body (to make defender think she is continuing to Left)
  • Pass should be made on the move. Encourage players to use upright reverse stick passes and reverse sweeps - as long as they maintain speed.
  • Players can adjust passing distance according to skill level.

EVALUATION:

  • Passes should be horizontal/lateral or slightly backwards  (to avoid being intercepted by a defender)..
  • Overlapping player accelerates on to the ball, and should not have to slow down to receive and move with it.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Same Drill
  • TTC & TTW: Same Drill - use as skill/shooting warm-up.
