2-on-1 with Extending Attacker

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) EXECUTION OF 2-on-1 WITH EXTENDING ATTACKER AND RECOVERING DEFENDER
PLAYERS 3+ PLAYERS
SPACE 15m x 10m
EQUIPMENT 5+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

  • O initiates play by passing to X1.
  • After the pass is made, O runs around the middle cone and defends. X2 also runs around the cone and looks for a pass from X1.
  • Objective is to pass or carry the ball over the line at the end of the grid.
  • Switch sides, so defender and X2 begin on the opposite side of the grid.

COACHING POINTS:

  • X2 sprints as quickly as possible to establish receiving position.
  • X1 carries the ball forward at controlled pace with ball in position on stick to make a penetrating pass to X2 as soon as it is available.
  • X2 should try to receive the ball with feet/hips facing the forward direction. This will keep forward momentum going upon reception, and help to eliminate the defender.

EVALUATION:

  • Once X2 is behind the defender (O), X2 can use sharp changes in direction and speed as well as clear signaling to get open and show where she wants to receive the pass.
  • X2 and X1 should be aware of each other’s movements and work together so that the passer can anticipate what move the receiver is going to make, and vice versa.
