Leading 2 - Upfield Movements

 

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) DEVELOP INDIVIDUAL LEADING SKILLS: CHANGE OF SPEED, DIRECTION, TIMING, PRESENTING FOR THE PASS

EXPLANATION:

  • X1 initiates play with lateral pass to X2.
  • X2 receives the ball moving forward, tracking with ball in option position to make a pass.
  • X3 leads across in front of ball, angling run forward. X3 leads inside, signaling for the ball, and then to the outside again.
  • On the second lead (to the outside), X2 passes the ball into space for X3 to run onto. 

VARIATIONS:

  • X3 receives the pass on the inside lead, instead of the outside lead.
  • Add passive defender (or coach), and challenge X2 to make correct pass to X3 when he is open on either left or right side. 

COACHING POINTS:

  • As X3 runs upfield, he makes sharp lateral movements and accelerates as he turns, signaling for the ball. The sharp turn will help the attacker to get open.
  • X2 carries the ball in option position with vision upfield, watching for signal from X3 and passing at the correct time.
  • Pass from X2 to X3 should be into X3’s running path (in front) so X3 can accelerate on to the ball. 

EVALUATION:

  • Change of speed and change of direction should be the focus of the upfield leads. X3’s movement should be aggressive and fluid.
  • Connection between X2 and X3 is important as play moves forward: visual signals/contact should be continuous.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: place cones in lines for X3 to run across and around, to help with running/leading lines going forward.
  • TTC & TTW: Active defender covers X3 as he leads to get open.
