Passing Shuttle 2 - Option Position Pass on the Move

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) PASS ON MOVE TO LEFT OR RIGHT FROM OPTION POSITION
PLAYERS 5+ FIELD PLAYERS
SPACE 20m x 20m SPACE
EQUIPMENT 5+ BALLS, 4+ CONES

EXPLANATION:

Stage 1: [Diagram A]
  • X1 carries ball into center of zone.
  • Once she reaches center of zone, X1 makes pass to either X2 or X3. After making the pass, X1 follows pass to position where receiver was.
  • Whoever receives pass (X2 or X3) controls ball and carries ball into the center of the zone. Once in the center, she passes to either X4 or X5, then follows her pass.
  • This pattern continues, and players balance passes to Left and Right so all players continue to be involved.
Stage 2: [Diagram B]
  • Players initiate the same pattern, but Coach positions herself in the Central area. As player approaches her, Coach puts stick out (or moves) to block one passing option. The player then must pass to the open side.
  • Coach turns around quickly once the pass has gone, to create the same scenario for the next player. Coming into the middle.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Ball should be carried in Option Position, with stick close to ball so that pass can be released at any time.
  • Players should learn to pass on the full run (without breaking stride), and also to make more of a powerful pass, using crossover step(s) and upper body rotation to generate power.
  • Vision: eyes should be up as player approaches center of zone (or approaches Coach), to see where passing options are.

EVALUATION:

  • To maintain the speed of attacking play, the ball carrier should be able to maintain running speed while looking up for passing options, and indeed through the passing action.
  • The player should also be aware and adjusting to where she is carrying the ball in relation to body when carrying from the Right and Left sides. This means that “Option Position” changes based on where the passing options are. Players should be able to identify this and make this adjustment.
