Forwards Interchange and Shoot 2

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE OFF-BALL MOVEMENT/INTERCHANGE FOR FORWARDS GOING TO GOAL; CHANGING SHOT ANGLE AT TOP OF CIRCLE
PLAYERS 5+ PLAYERS
SPACE 35m TO GOAL, INCLUDING CIRCLE
EQUIPMENT 10+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

Stage 1 (diagram 1)
  • X1 makes a lateral pass across to X2. As this is happening, X3 and X4 arc and interchange positions.
  • X2 turns and passes into space forward to X3, who is running onto the ball.
  • X4 continues arcing run in and towards goal on the left side.
  • X3 receives the ball, enters circle and then makes a lateral pass across to X4.
  • X4 receives and shoots.
  • X3 and X4 play out rebounds.
Stage 2 (diagram 2)
  • X2 passes the ball on a 45 degree angle across to X4 arcing to the left.
  • X4 receives on forehand on the move, turns forward towards the circle. As she reaches the circle edge, X4 turns and passes lateral to X3.
  • X3 receives and shoots.
  • X3 and X4 play out rebounds.
Both Stages
  • *Mirror the drill: start on opposite side so passing and rotation goes in opposite direction (see Diagram 2).
Stage 3: Angles (diagram 3)
  • Shift the angle of the entire drill to a 45 degree from right or left side. When doing this, make sure the shot is coming from the side closer to the top of the circle.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Deception as attacker enters the circle: As X3 enters the circle, she should look up to the goal and set up the ball in position as if she is going to shoot, This will create the opportunity for a deceptive lateral pass to X4 across the top of the circle, and change the angle of the shot.

EVALUATION:

  • Distance: The spacing of this drill may need to change, based on skill level and your team’s attacking style. To make it simpler, increase the distances.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Same
  • TTC & TTW: Add a coach or defensive player at the top of the circle. When X3 or  X4 receives the pass and is carrying the ball to the circle edge, defender takes away either the pass or the shot. Attacker chooses the open option (if pass is blocked, carry in and shoot, and vice versa).
