Cut-Back Receiving

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) DYNAMIC CUT-BACK LEADS TO BALL FOR STRONG RECEIVING AND TURN UPFIELD
COMMUNICATION AND TIMING BETWEEN PASSER/RECEIVER
PLAYERS 10+ PLAYERS
SPACE 30m x 20m
EQUIPMENT 20+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

  • Start with one player at each set of cones (see diagram).
  • Receiving player initiates start of play by presenting for the ball using stick or pointing.
  • Passer pushes ball accurately directly to the stick of the receiver.
  • Receiver does not move until pass is released, then cuts back, receives the ball and turns around the back cone, turns to look upfield for the next pass. Repeat the process and follow your pass.
  • For the circuit, follow pass each time. For the shooting version, after the shot, go to the back of the opposite side.

VARIATIONS:

  • See circuit option and shooting option if you want to involve GKs.
  • Instead of turning “closed” at each station, have the receiver turn “open”, pull across body to face upfield.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Play should be initiated by receiver, not passer. When receiver signals, pass is made, and receiver should not cut back/move to the ball until the ball is off the receiver’s stick, so she is not stopping to wait for the ball.
  • Ball position: receiver should take the ball out in front of body and keep it out front turning the corner so she can get her eyes up to look for the signal from the next receiver.
  • Pass must be accurate and flat on the turf to allow receiver to pick the ball up on the move.

EVALUATION:

  • Receiver runs “through” the reception. Hands and stick should be well out in front of body and allow the receiver to accelerate through the ball into the turn to create separation from a defender.
  • With good timing and communication, the drill players and balls should move fluidly through the stations, avoiding “stop/start” movements.

PROGRESSION:

  • This drill set up is appropriate for all Stages. Distances can be larger at higher levels, and speed should increase.
