Areas of the Game Attacking Defending Transition Set Plays Goalkeeping

5 vs 4 Zone Game

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) PLAY EFFECTIVELY IN NUMBERS-UP AND NUMBERS-DOWN SITUATIONS
PLAYERS 10+ PLAYERS
SPACE HALF-FIELD
EQUIPMENT 10+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

  • 5v4 Directional game play. Normal rules.
  • Play 2 periods of 5 minutes: First period Team X has 5 players and Team O has 4 players. Second period Team O has 5, Team X has 4.
  • Use 23m line as halfway line. Both teams must have at least 2 players on either side of halfway line. Players can switch zones and interchange, as long as there are still two players on either half.

COACHING POINTS:

NUMBERS-UP:
  • The team with 5 players should look to use their numerical advantage to build the ball forward into attacking area and create goalscoring opportunities.
  • Time is limited so Numbers-Up team should look to move ball efficiently and quickly to attack/eliminate.
  • Double-teams: When defending, the Numbers-Up team should look to double team aggressively and dispossess quickly to avoid delay tactics.
NUMBERS-DOWN:
  • Team with 4 players should protect the central area (dangerous goalscoring area) and avoid getting eliminated by chasing the ball. Apply defensive pressure when possible.
  • Hold and delay, limiting goalscoring opportunities for Numbers-Up team.

EVALUATION:

  • Players should be able to possess the ball in a 3v2 situation, look to isolate a 2v1 and choose the right time to go forward to eliminate.
  • Defensive Communication is key in this game. It is an open space where a mistake in positioning or skill can quickly lead to a goal. Effective basic communication includes:
  • Which direction to force/channel (simple commands eg: “force right”)
  • Need for interchange/switch (vertical zone).
  • A second player joining for a double-team.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Not applicable.
  • TTC & TTW: More advanced concepts.
  • -Work on aggressive pressing and trapping spaces when Numbers-Up.
  • -Overlapping and off-ball interchange movements.
  • -Controlling tempo/pace of game based on the score.
