Give-and-Go Right Side

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) EXECUTION OF GIVE-AND-GO SKILLS ON RIGHT SIDE TO ELIMINATE IN 2 vs 2 SITUATION
PLAYERS 4+ PLAYERS
SPACE  20m x 15m (SIDELINE PREFERABLE)
EQUIPMENT 5+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

  • X1 begins by tracking forward with the ball towards the defender O1.
  • X2 starts behind marking defender O2, and cuts back towards the ball, getting in front of O2, in a line just outside the line of O1’s stick. X2 signals with open stick.
  • X1 passes the ball directly to X2’s open stick, and then X1 continues run to the Right, outside and past O1.
  • X2 opens up stick blade redirects the ball with the first touch into space for X1 to run onto.
  • After X1 receives this pass, X’s can cut inside and go to goal.

COACHING POINTS:

  • TIMING is the most critical element for success in this drill. This requires X1 and X2 to work together, and be aware of the other’s movement. X2 should not lead for the pass until X1 is ready to pass, and X1 should not pass until X2 is in position.
  • X1 must carry the ball in Option Position, in position where he can keep his eyes up, and release the pass at the correct time.
  • X1 should continue running, and in fact accelerate to the right immediately after releasing the pass. This will allow him to get past the defender.
  • The key difference between the Give-and-Go on the Right side instead of the Left, is that on the Right side, X1 is passing the ball on the O1’s open stick side. This means X1 must either move O1 enough to pass around the open stick, or lift the ball over O1’s flat open stick. The lift will make the return pass more difficult for O2.

EVALUATION:

  • Executing a successful Give-and-Go under pressure against live defenders is an advanced skill, and more difficult if the defender knows the drill. To make the drill flow, have O1 be passive, change his angle slightly but not try to intercept. As the attackers have success, O1 can become active.
  • To give X1 more options against an active defender, allow X1 to eliminate with dribble to the right side if O1 blocks the passing lane for Give-and-Go, X1 can pull to right and run through with ball himself.

PROGRESSION:

  • LTT: Instead of defenders, use cones to pass around, to work on timing and pass/redirect skills (see diagram 2)
