Receiving Overhead with Pressure

DRILL OBJECTIVE(S) WORK ON RECEIVING OVERHEADS UNDER PRESSURE, CONTROL AND RELEASE
PLAYERS 5+ PLAYERS
SPACE HALF-FIELD
EQUIPMENT 10+ BALLS

EXPLANATION:

  • X1 passes lateral across field to X2. X2 throws overhead  up towards defender (O).
  • X3 and X4 reposition in front and behind receiving defender, ensuring they are 5m from the defender when she receives the ball.
  • O controls ball, moves to space and clears ball into goal.
  • X3 and X4 pressure O as she controls ball, double team and try to win ball. If X3 or X4 win possession, they go 2-on-1 to attacking goal.
  • Practice drill on both sides - alternating.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Defender picks up line of overhead and gets underneath ball early to get position.
  • Defender should be aware of positioning of X3 and X4, and move ball quickly and under control to space, away from pressure.

EVALUATION:

  • Is defender able to settle the ball quickly to the ground?
  • Defender should ensure that the ball does not pass behind her - better to let it hit her body than allow it to go through.

VARIATIONS:

  • Overhead can be thrown to different positions to challenge defender: in front, higher and in behind, to left and right.
